Back to main news pageWork starts in Kent on New Police premises
Work has now started on the new divisional headquarters at Thamesway, Northfleet for Kent Police with Deputy Chief Constable Jim Barker-McCardle and Kent Police Authority member Ken London, making the first excavation on site. This new facility for the North Kent area of Kent Police will be ready by early Summer 2008 and will be supplemented by 2 additional Town Centre police stations at Gravesend and Dartford. The £30m PFI project has been signed with Justice Support Services (North Kent) Ltd, a Reliance led consortium including Bank of Scotland Corporate and Kier Project Investments.
Mark Underwood, Managing Director of Reliance Secure Task Management Ltd stated; “We are delighted to have secured this contract with Kent Police. It emphasises our strong track record as a leading provider of support services to the police. Our partnership is directed at offering innovative business processes and high levels of service. This enables our customers to achieve improved use of their infrastructure and highly trained people. Our objective is to facilitate Kent Police in their drive to consistently improve their day to day operations.”
The police operational centre, a modern environmentally sensitive building, will house a custody suite of 40 cells, offices for police and civilian staff, and the division’s store for evidential and Lost & Found property. Reliance will continue to maintain the premises for the next 30 years providing services that include the public front desk, catering, cleaning, waste management, conference suite management and police vehicle management.
North Kent Area Commander Chief Superintendent Gary Beautridge said: “We aim to provide police stations and officers to make it easier for people to contact us in person, perhaps to report crimes, raise concerns or seek advice. These buildings will be more visible and provide a more welcoming environment than the existing older buildings. The move of support services will not affect our front-line policing – our response to calls is coordinated from our force control centre in Maidstone. Our neighbourhood officers also provide an approachable link for residents. The new operations centre should help make us more efficient, allowing us to provide a better service to the public.”
The 11,500sm facility makes the most of modern architectural innovations and the 4 storey building incorporates a central atrium and “Street” providing a communal area and space for break out areas and restaurants. An environmental friendly design incorporates a geothermal heat pump system for heating and cooling the building which will reduce its energy consumption. The latest CCTV and security access systems will be utilised and installed by a sister company; Reliance High Tech.
Reliance will be responsible for ensuring Kent Police make a smooth transition to the new building, with the utmost importance being placed on the continuity of policing for the community.
